GRE General Test - Overview (MUST read before any preparation)

What is GRE?

GRE - Graduate Record Examination
-GRE is an aptitude test. GRE Score is required to get the graduate admission in most of the academic fields of American universities. Thus, it is required for graduate study in USA.
-GRE General Test is internationally organised by ETS (Educational Testing System) Princeton, New Jersy, USA. Their website is http://www.ets.org/.

The GRE General Test measures 3 skills of test takers:
a) Verbal Reasoning
b) Quantitative Reasoning
c) Analytical Writing
These skills have been acquired over a long period of time during student's development and these are not related to any specific field of study.


FORMAT of the GRE
The GRE General Exam is approximately 3 HOURS long.
It has 3 Sections:
a) WRITING -- 2 Questions -- (45+30) -- 75 Minutes
10 Minutes BREAK
b) VERBAL -- 30 Questions -- 30 Minutes
1 Minute BREAK
c) MATHS -- 28 Questions -- 45 Minutes

-The GRE Test always begins with the writing section.
-The Maths and Verbal sections can appear in any order. Also, the questions within each section can appear in any order.
-One Extra Section - EXPERIMENTAL (Unidentified or Unscored) section may appear in the GRE Exam which may be in any order during exam, after the analytical writing section. For example, it may appear after analytical writing or after maths section or even at the end of all the sections. Experimental section's time and scores are NOT counted in GRE Scores.


GRE General Test SCORING
It is Scored in 2 Parts:

a) Out of 1600
-- VERBAL Section has 800 Marks
-- MATHS Section has 800 Marks
These Score will be Immediately known to you on your Computer Screen, after You Finish Your Exam.

b) Out of 6 Bands
-- ANALYTICAL WRITING Section has 0 to 6 Score Range
These Score, sent by ETS (USA) will be Delivered to You through Mail Post, after 10-15 Days after Your GRE Exam.


GRE is the COMPUTER ADAPTIVE TEST (CAT)
---Which Means, You Take your GRE Test on the Computer in one of the ETS Selected Authorised Centres & then Computer Adapts Yours Responses to Each and Every Questions.
---That means, if You answered wrong or in low level, your next Question will be Easier than the Previous one and your Score-Range will be Low.
---But if You answered Absolutely Right, your next Question will be Harder than the Previous one and thus your Score-Range will also be High and You get High Score.
---At the End of Test, it will Give You SCORE according to your Answers.
---GRE is Mutiple Choice Question Exam (except Analytical Writing)
---You Cannot Skip Any Question During the Test.
---All Questions Are Compulsory.
---You Cannot Go Back to Previously Answered Questions During the Test.
---First 5 Questions Are Very Very Important in any (Verbal/Maths) Section. So, Read and Solve these Questions SLOWLY within timelimit and CAREFULLY.
---For Better Score, Give Importance to 1-20 Questions. If you are wrong in Last 2-3 Questions, they will not Affected your Final Score, but if you are wrong in First 2-3 Questions, then you are Gone. Your Score will be very Low. So Be Careful..!!
